Case Study: Our War
Art is an Option were approached by Clackmannanshire Museum Services to design and produce an exhibition based on the reminiscences of people from Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire during the Second World War at home and abroad.
This proved to be an absorbing piece of work, presenting us with a creative challenge and a sense of responsibility for presenting many people’s personal memories to the broader public.
There were three key areas to this project:
• Exhibition
• Book + DVD
• Website
Exhibition
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The exhibition was held at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. Art is an Option worked with Clackmannanshire Museum Services in establishing an effective solution to show the wealth of information that had been collected.
Working with the space available we produced 14 wall mounted panels and another 3 to integrate with the touring exhibition. Title tags were produced for artifacts inside cases such as uniforms, gas masks and scale models of vehicles.
We produced two banners for exterior display which were positioned between the columns to advertise the exhibition. In addition two pull-up displays were designed and positioned in the entrance leading to the main exhibition.
Art is an Option created the Invite for the opening. This was themed as a war time ration book.
Book + DVD
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 100-page bound book and DVD of interviews was produced to accompany the exhibition. These were distributed to local schools to remind/inform the local communities of the impact the war had on the area. Copies were given away to families and survivors who helped to make the exhibition possible.
Website
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The website was an online version of the book, which allowed schools and people with an interest, including those from further afield, including the USA, Canada and Australia, to look back at the lives of their relatives and the affect the war had on them.
The site was built using HTML / CSS and developed to W3C standards.
